history of the computer

  • history of the computer the way i see it.
  • I will present a short computer history timeline. I will not go into detail spec about those machine. In the history of computers there as been a lot of thing going on, it really started around 1939. To me the first computer as we know it, is the ENIAC.

    Of course there has been HP, and IBM that as build super calculator in around 1939-1942. Even the Harvard Mark-1, to me they where more calculator then computer.

    In 1946 the public got its first glimpse of the ENIAC, a machine built by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert, this was to me the first machine capable of processing a program.

    It as the capability of 1,000 times on the speed of its contemporaries big calculator. Then they where :

  • Around 1941,42 The Zuse Z3 Computer
  • 1942- The Atanasoff-Berry Computer from Iowa State College that really never work.
  • Project Whirlwind start in 1943, it was a analog computer, but found it inaccurate and inflexible. About the same time ENIAC was started and was a Digital computer.
  • 1946- ENIAC project was finish and also AVIDAC
  • 1948- IBM´s SSEC, the first computer from IBM, and use the Technology: 20,000 relays, 12,500 vacuum tubes.
  • And a couple of other project to finally end up with the first commercial computer to attract widespread public attention.
  • This was the UNIVAC I in 1951.
  • 1953- IBM shipped its first electronic computer, the 701.
  • All of those main frame computer needed a large room with air conditioning. They all use vacuum tube and relay, patch cord was needed to program those machine and lot's of human operator.

    A new era was beginning.. The Digital world.

  • 1959- IBM´s 7000 series mainframes were the company´s first transistorized computers. Which emerged significantly faster and more dependable than vacuum tube machines.
